Sixth Grade General Studies Curriculum Overview

Art · Demonstrate awareness of color and texture. · Demonstrate a visual awareness in relation to proportion, balance and variety in work. · Express personal artistic growth. Demonstrate proper use of materials and tools.
Language Arts · Use a variety of strategies to expand reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. · Understand the meaning of texts using a variety of comprehension strategies. · Read and respond to a variety of reading materials and genre. · Compose various pieces of writing with correct structure and grammar. · Understand and communicate effectively through listening and speaking. Read and analyze specific books, themes or characters.
Library Sciences · Identify and locate various book and magazine collections. · Evaluate materials for personal use and study materials. Identify and research various authors, illustrators and literary awards.

Learn specific rules for individual, dual, and team activities.
Science – Earth Science · Conduct and design a scientific investigation using the inquiry method. · Identify Earth’s composition, structure, processes and investigate human impact on the environment. · Investigate how the atmosphere interacts with the Earth’s systems. · Compare objects in the solar system and explain their interactions with the Earth and structure of the universe. Analyze scientific problems with scientific inquiry and views.
Social Studies – American History and Minnesota History · Acquire geographical knowledge of people, places and environments. · Demonstrate knowledge and causes, major events and people of the Civil War. · Evaluate the steps in Reconstruction and the political climate of the era. · Analyze the transformation of the American economy and changing social and political conditions in response to the Industrial Revolution. · Demonstrate knowledge of Minnesota’s history and its impact on our states growth. Understand the impact of major wars and events of the 1920’s to the present on our state.
Technology · Utilize a word processing program. · Use multimedia authoring and presentation tools. · Create and manipulate a spreadsheet and database. · Access and utilize the Internet. Create a variety of quality projects using technology.
